The Implementation Plans for Sector 5 “S. Giovanni Battista Hospital” of the Foligno Historic Center Master Plan, which divides the area into two sub-sectors A and B, were prepared on behalf of BNL Real Estate Funds.
The area contains buildings of great importance to the entire city: in addition to the former hospital, the complex of the Cathedral of St. Felician and the Palazzo delle Canoniche, the Bishop’s Palace, the Church of the Nunziatella, the Church of St. James, the Church of St. Salvator, the Convent of St. Lucy, the Church of the Annunciation, the former Church of the Suffrage, and noble palaces such as Palazzo Varini and Palazzo Pierantoni are located here. The historic urban fabric is completed by residential buildings composed of terraced structures and courtyard houses, as well as 20th-century constructions along Corso Nuovo and Via dei Molini.
The project aims to redevelop this unused and deteriorating urban area, respecting existing planning constraints and fostering a renewed integration of the spaces with the entire historic center of Foligno.
The plan proposes restoring the historic buildings by demolishing superstructures that concealed the original 19th-century layout: the third floor added in 1969, the low structures built over time next to the arms of the historic cross-shaped plan, and the volume connecting the historic building to the former care institute will be removed to allow a clear reading of the original forms.
The new buildings, though differing in function, will follow shared guidelines to maintain a unified character and enhance the urban scale of the intervention.
To revitalize the area, the Plan also includes large public and pedestrian spaces onto which new commercial activities will open, transforming this district into a recognizable “urban place” and giving it the identity of a green, pedestrian-oriented area within the historic center.
